Remembering Nancy Pitts

Eleven years ago, Nancy Pitts tragically lost her life to the freezing temperatures on the steps of the Saratoga Senior Center. In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, city leaders and compassionate community members came together to launch the Code Blue shelter. In its first year, Code Blue provided refuge to 69 individuals, a stark reminder of the critical need for safe havens in our community.

Nancy, a 54-year-old mother of two and former schoolteacher, left a legacy far greater than her personal story. Her untimely passing became the catalyst for creating a secure winter shelter for those facing the challenges of homelessness.

Today, we honor Nancy Pitts and the lasting impact of her life, recognizing how her memory continues to inspire a shared commitment to compassion and shelter for those in need.

"I wrote the following story in December of 2012, when I worked at Franklin Community Center. I was so moved by my interaction with Nancy and her story, that I wrote down the words from my heart to properly reflect upon it. Nothing could have prepared me for the fact that just one year later, Nancy would no longer be with us..."
