From Heartbreak to Hope: Khalil’s Journey to Redemption

Khalil’s story is shaped by the loss of connection and the end of his marriage, experiences that deeply affected his sense of stability and belonging. As his relationships shifted, he found himself navigating grief and isolation. His journey through Shelters of Saratoga reflects not only recovery, but a meaningful rebuilding of community and purpose.

Khalil had been part of the Saratoga community for about a decade when his life took an unexpected turn. Three years ago, his marriage began to change and ultimately led him to leave his home. As Khalil explains, he experienced more than the end of a relationship. “I became disconnected from fourteen other people,” he says quietly. The shift in his marriage also meant losing daily connection with extended family and friends who had been central to his life. Without those relationships, he felt untethered.

Code Blue 2025-26 Season Impact

As we move toward the end of the 2025–26 Code Blue season, we want to pause and share what your generosity has made possible. When we talk about our work, we often begin with Code Blue, and for good reason. Code Blue is often the last stop when every other option has been exhausted, but more importantly, it is often an inflection point in someone’s life, a place where hope for a brighter future begins.

B95.5 fm 20 Outstanding Women

Our very own Allison Nolan was recently recognized as one of B95.5’s 20 Outstanding Women—a well-deserved honor for someone who gives so much to our community.

For nearly six years, Allison has served as a dedicated Case Manager at Shelters of Saratoga. She meets clients exactly where they are—both figuratively and literally—providing consistent support to tenants while always stepping in wherever she’s needed most.

Allison’s work is grounded in a compassionate, whole-person approach that addresses the social determinants of health. She builds genuine, trust-based relationships and ensures that support reaches those most at risk of falling through the cracks. A skilled systems navigator and empathetic listener, she offers more than resources—she provides connection, dignity, and stability.

Her impact has strengthened the fabric of the Saratoga community and reflects a kind of quiet, essential leadership that truly deserves recognition.

Congratulations, Allison, on this outstanding achievement!

In the Community:
Interagency Awareness Day

Staff members: Mahadhi Walker, Stephanie Romeo and Allison Nolan

We wanted to share a meaningful moment from last month that reflects the power of community collaboration. On March 11th, we joined fellow organizations at the Saratoga City Center for Interagency Awareness Day, hosted by Lifeworks Community Action an event we found incredibly necessary and beneficial.

It was a valuable opportunity to engage directly with partners who share our mission. Our team spent the day educating other agencies about the programs we offer, from street outreach to shelter services, ensuring more organizations know how to connect with us when they encounter individuals in need. Every connection strengthens the safety net we all rely on.

Equally important were the connections our active case managers made throughout the event. By meeting face-to-face with other resource providers, they built and strengthened relationships that will directly benefit the clients we serve. When our case managers have trusted contacts and a clear understanding of how to navigate systems, it removes barriers and streamlines access to the wraparound support our clients so often need.

None of this work happens in isolation, and events like Interagency Day remind us that when agencies come together, the entire community grows stronger, more coordinated, and better equipped to help those we serve. Thank you for standing with us and making this vital work possible.

Many thanks to Lifeworks Community Action for planning and hosting this valuable event each year!

How to Help

Front Desk Volunteers

Our emergency shelter relies on friendly faces at the front desk to greet guests, answer phones, and keep things running smoothly. We are looking for reliable volunteers to fill a few specific gaps in our schedule right now.

We are currently in need of coverage for:

  • Morning Shifts

  • Thursday Afternoons

  • Friday Afternoons

It’s a rewarding way to make a direct impact in our community. If you have a few hours to spare during these times, we would love to hear from you!

Stock The Pantry

We are so grateful for the incredible generosity of our friends and neighbors who continue to lift up Shelters of Saratoga. Whether you've volunteered, donated, or simply spread the word—you are the heart of what makes this work possible. Thank you!

As we move through the season, we wanted to share a few items we could really use right now at the emergency shelter:

  • Canned hearty soups

  • Chef Boyardee pasta meals

  •  Boxes of cereal

  •  Instant oatmeal packets

These simple comforts go a long way in bringing warmth and nourishment to our guests.

If you'd like to help, donations can be dropped off at: 20 Walworth Street, Saratoga Springs, 12866
