David’s Path Home

David is soft-spoken, compassionate, and deeply thoughtful—
the kind of person who never imagined he would experience homelessness.

"I'm very kind-hearted. I care about people. I really love animals.
I hate violence. I'm just a very peaceful person."

After graduating high school, David found himself without the support of his parents and suddenly facing life on his own. Growing up in a household affected by substance use, he was familiar with instability, but he was unprepared for the realities of homelessness. As he struggled to cope, he eventually turned to substances himself.

Movie Screening and Discussion: No Place to Grow Old
Bringing Senior Homelessness Into Focus

American adults are aging into homelessness at unprecedented rates.

Last month, Shelters of Saratoga hosted a screening of No Place to Grow Old, a powerful documentary highlighting one of the fastest-growing populations experiencing homelessness: older adults.

The film shared a sobering projection—the number of unhoused seniors in the United States is expected to triple by 2030.

This issue is already impacting our community. In 2026, Shelters of Saratoga provided emergency shelter to 88 individuals age 55+ and 13 individuals age 65+. In 2025, those numbers were 30 and 10, respectively.

These aren't just statistics. They are our parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends. When we recognize that homelessness can affect people later in life, we move beyond stereotypes and toward understanding, compassion, and action.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this important conversation.

Community Cleanup Day

Members of our team gathered for a community cleanup day, focusing on areas that are frequently used by members of the community we serve. Together, we worked to remove litter and debris, helping to restore shared spaces and reinforce the importance of community pride, stewardship, and respect for our neighbors.

Being good neighbors is a core value at SOS. We believe in the importance of community, taking pride in our shared spaces, and leading by example.

Several staff members at SOS joined in solidarity for Cleanup Day, May 26th, 2026

Gardening With Pitney Meadows Community Farm

Shelters of Saratoga recently partnered with Pitney Meadows Community Farm to give our Walworth Street garden beds a seasonal refresh. Team members rolled up their sleeves to help unload fresh soil, repot flowers, and plant a variety of vegetables that we look forward to incorporating into future homemade meals for our house guests.

Beyond the hands-on work, the day provided a wonderful opportunity to learn more about gardening, sustainable growing practices, and the importance of community partnerships. We are incredibly grateful to the team at Pitney Meadows for sharing their time, knowledge, and expertise with us.
