In Case You Missed It: Milestone Reached for Permanent Code Blue Shelter

On August 20th, the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the purchase of land at 96-116 Ballston Avenue in Saratoga Springs and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Shelters of Saratoga to build and operate the facility.

This new shelter will bring stability to our essential winter services, improving health and housing outcomes while ensuring the safety of participants, staff, and volunteers. After ten years of operating in temporary locations, this is a significant step forward, eliminating the yearly challenge of finding a viable site.

Thank you to everyone in the community for your continued support. Stay tuned for more details, and in the meantime, you can read the full press release on our website.

At our Code Blue shelter, we provide a safe and warm place for our community members experiencing homelessness during the harsh winter months. But we can’t do it alone—we need your help to make sure no one goes hungry.

Program Highlight: Our Health Home Program

Mobile Health and Housing Care Management

Shelters of Saratoga is a NYS Health Home (NYSHH) provider through Adirondack Health Institute (AHI), which offers ongoing care management services to eligible Medicaid enrollees with a chronic health condition. The goal of Health Home is to stabilize/manage a participant’s chronic condition to avoid burdening the health care system. The Health Home program offers the following services: comprehensive assessments, goal setting, healthcare management, and housing stabilization. Our Health Home care management services are available to enrollees no matter where they are: at home, on the streets, or in shelter. We have successfully housed 15 individuals this year alone.

Film For Thought: The Vegas Tunnels - Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan

In Vegas Tunnels (2024), investigative journalist Andrew Callaghan ventures into the hidden world beneath Las Vegas, where an entire community of people live in the city’s storm drains. These tunnels, designed to manage floodwaters, have become an underground refuge for those who have nowhere else to go.

Through a series of raw and unfiltered interviews, Callaghan uncovers the stories of individuals who have found themselves in these tunnels, exploring themes of addiction, economic hardship, and the loss of stability. He also delves into the systemic issues that have driven so many to seek shelter in such a perilous environment.

Vegas Tunnels offers a compelling look at the unseen side of homelessness, challenging viewers to confront the realities that many prefer to ignore, and underscores the importance of compassionate and informed approaches to helping those in need.

Warning: this documentary depicts substance use, gambling, and uses explicit language.
